Health & Safety Unleashed: Health & Safety Management Systems
Health & Safety Management Systems: Ensuring the health and safety of your employees is more important than ever before. Beyond being a moral responsibility, it’s a legal requirement that organisations cannot afford to overlook. At EverSafe OHS Solutions, we understand the needs of workplace safety, and we are dedicated to helping organisations like yours.
Suitable arrangements to “manage for health and safety”.
Health & safety Management Systems: The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) have moved away from using the POPMAR (Policy, Organising, Planning, Measuring Performance, Auditing and Review) model of managing health and safety to a PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) approach.
http://www.hse.gov.uk , http://www.iso.org
This move towards PDCA has achieved a balance between the systems and behavioural aspects of management and it also treats health and safety management as an integral part of good management, rather than as a stand-alone system. We will discuss PDCA in depth in a future blog.
A systematic approach is necessary. it may not require a formal health and safety management system but, whatever approach is used, it probably contains the steps Plan, Do, Check, Act. The success of whatever process or system is in place hinges on the attitudes and behaviours of people in the organisation.
Proportionate to the Risks and the Size of the Organisation
‘There is a need for a sensible and proportionate approach to risk management, in short, a balanced approach – this means ensuring that paperwork is proportionate, does not get in the way of doing the job, and it certainly does not mean risk elimination at all costs. ‘ Judith Hackitt, HSE Chair (2008–2016)
In other words, the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) applies! It’s important to remember that the management system has to function effectively, at all times, no matter how busy the organisation is.
I have yet to meet an organisation that is resource rich when it comes to the management of health and safety, at Eversafe OHS Solutions we firmly believe that for health & safety management to be successful if must be effective, efficient and affordable.
Planning a Health & Safety Management System
When designing an organisations health and safety arrangements, several factors should be considered, including:
- Legal and other Requirements: Ensure compliance with legal obligations and other pertinent regulations.
- Risk Profile of the Organisation:
- Competency Levels:
- Leadership Commitment:
- Safety Cultures
Deciding on the Management System Format
Health and Safety Management Systems can be a valuable tool for effective health and safety management. Whether to adopt one is an organisations prerogative.
Examples include national and international standards such as;
HSG 65 Managing for health and safety,
45001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
Sector-specific frameworks.
While the language and methods may vary, these systems often boil down to the key principles of Plan, Do, Check, and Act.
Summary of the benefits of a Health & Safety Management System
In summary, a Health and Safety Management System not only protects employees and the organisation from harm but also contributes to improved overall performance, cost savings, and a positive reputation.
